ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Graded 6 by CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), the Graduate Program in Chemistry (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Química - PQU) has 23 professors who can act as advisors, acting in 11 different research fields.
  • Master's Program
In the master's program, the graduate student must obtain 14 credits in six regular subjects and eight elective ones.
The deadline to complete the program is 24 months.
Candidates whose mother tongue is not Portuguese must take a proficiency exam in Portuguese and also in English, if the previous education is not in English.
  • Doctoral Program
In the doctoral program, the graduate student must obtain 28 credits, six of which in mandatory subjects and 22 in elective ones, completing the program within 48 months at most.
Candidates whose mother tongue is not Portuguese must take a proficiency exam in Portuguese and also in English, if the previous education is not in English.
The Program offers scholarships from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) and Araucaria Foundation (Fundação Araucária).

RESEARCH FIELDS
  • CHEMICAL ANALYSIS BY FLOW INJECTION

Development and automation of analytical methods using chemical analysis by flow injection (FIA) or chemical analysis by sequential injection (SIA)

  • DEVELOPMENT OF MEDICATIONS FOR PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT)

Is based on a photosensitive compound and visible light in the treatment of diseases that have abnormal tissue growth. This category includes cancer, some degenerative diseases, and diseases caused by infestations of microorganisms. Once the medication is located in the diseased tissue, the incidence of light causes the photo-excited compound to react with oxygen, generating reactive species of the same, such as singlet oxygen. The active ingredients are formulated in water, where several physical-chemical processes occur, requiring detailed investigation of these. In the formulations, the use of surfactant agents with formation of micelles stands out. In addition to the chemical aspects of the formulation, we perform in vitro studies on cultures of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, etc.

  • DEVELOPMENT OF ANALYTICAL METHODS

Development of spectrophotometric methods for the study of inorganic and organic chemical species.

  • SYNTHESIS, STRUCTURE, CONFORMATION AND STEREOCHEMISTRY

Conformational structural analysis using multinuclear NMR. Molecular modeling by computational calculations.

  • ORGANIC PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY

Study of compounds of biological and/or pharmacological interest: reactivity, conformation, structure and physicochemical properties.

  • POLYMERS AND COMPOSITES

Modification of polymer surfaces, production of composites, degradation of polymers. Use of agricultural waste as a source of raw material for the production of resins, polymer blends, adhesives, cellulose derivatives and other products of commercial interest. Application in several areas: catalysis, adsorption, removal/decomposition of pollutants, biomaterials.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY AND TRACE ANALYSIS

Environmental studies - soil, water, biosphere and its biota - aiming to determine the concentration levels, as well as the dynamics and speciation of pollutants. Treatment and use of waste. Analytical, clinical and biochemical aspects of the presence of trace elements in the human body.

  • FOOD CHEMISTRY

Chemical composition, metal contaminants, bioavailability of metals, lipids, cholesterol and fatty acids in products of animal and plant origin. Additives. Vitamins. Pesticide residues. Development of new food products and methodologies for new analytical techniques.

  • MATERIALS CHEMISTRY

Study of inorganic polymers chemically modified with organofunctional groups and metal ions; study of binary mixed oxides; study of organic-inorganic hybrid composites. Applications of the materials studied: in catalysis, electrochemistry, adsorption.

  • NATURAL PRODUCT CHEMISTRY

Synthesis, isolation, identification, chemical transformation and applications of natural products.

  • ORGANIC SYNTHESIS

Development of methodologies for the synthesis of organic products and their applications in obtaining natural products of pharmacological interest. Synthesis and molecular modeling of organic compounds with potential pharmacological activity. Synthesis of heterocyclic compounds and application of methodologies based on the principles of green chemistry.
